DOW Chemistry Classroom Project

Dow Chemistry Classroom is a collaborative initiative between Dow Thailand Group, which is committed to enhancing scientific knowledge and science education among young people, and the Chemical Society of Thailand under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Professor Dr. Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, the Princess Srisavangavadhana.

The initiative aims to promote the teaching and learning of chemistry through the Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory approach, an innovative laboratory technique that emphasizes safety, minimizes the use of chemicals, shortens experimental time, and reduces the burden of chemical waste disposal. Furthermore, this approach enables every student to actively perform laboratory experiments themselves, rather than merely observing demonstrations or listening to lectures delivered by the instructor.

The Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory technique has been recognized by UNESCO and has gained widespread acceptance internationally, including in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan, China, and Cambodia, among many other countries.

This initiative also represents the first concrete implementation in Thailand in which the private sector has introduced and supported the integration of the Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory curriculum into the national education system, thereby fostering more effective, safer, and environmentally responsible chemistry education.

The principal activities of the project include conducting Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory workshops for secondary school science teachers, monitoring and evaluating classroom implementation, organizing competitions on the presentation of innovative applications of Small-Scale Chemistry experiments, and providing training for Dow Chemistry Classroom Master Teachers. These activities are designed to develop a network of highly qualified Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory trainers in Thailand who are capable of disseminating and expanding the adoption of Small-Scale Chemistry techniques throughout the country.

Since the project’s inception, a total of 352 primary and secondary school teachers from 176 schools nationwide have participated in the program. As a result, more than 30,000 students have directly benefited from the implementation of Small-Scale Chemistry
