Brief History
Originally, chemists in Thailand were united under the Chemistry Division of the Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King. The Chemical Society of Thailand was established during the tenure of Emeritus Professor Lieutenant Commander Khamchorn Manunapichu, Royal Thai Navy, who served as President of the Chemistry Division of the Science Society of Thailand Under the Patronage of His Majesty the King.
Emeritus Professor Lt.Cdr. Khamchorn Manunapichu, RTN was invited by UNESCO to participate in meetings concerning international cooperation among chemists worldwide. At that time, many countries already had their own chemical societies. During these discussions, there was a consensus that UNESCO should establish the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD), with the primary objective of promoting research collaboration and networking between chemists from low-income countries and those from developed nations. The organization was subsequently established in 1981.
At the same time, Professor Emeritus Lieutenant Dr.Kamchorn Manunapichu joined representatives from chemical societies across Asia to establish the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS) in 1979 (B.E. 2522). To enable Thailand’s participation in various international scientific organizations, the Chemical Society of Thailand was founded and officially registered on 23 June 1980 (B.E. 2523). During the period from 1980 to 2006, the Society actively participated in numerous international scientific organizations and activities.
Recognizing the importance of international cooperation in the advancement of chemical sciences, he subsequently led the establishment of the Chemical Society of Thailand, which was officially registered on 23 June 1980 (B.E. 2523). The Society thereafter became an active participant in numerous international scientific organizations and activities during the period 1980–2006.
On 26 December 2008 (B.E. 2551), the Society’s name was changed from the “Chemical Society of Thailand” to the ” Chemical Society of Thailand under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana” (formerly Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, Princess Royal). At present, the Society has approximately 2,500 members.
