After receiving training on small-scale chemistry experiments in 2023, Dr. Asoka De Silva (Sri Lanka), Deputy Director General of the Faculty of Teacher Education and Alternative Education at the National Institute of Education (NIE), recognized the significant benefits of adopting this approach. Building on this momentum, the NIE carried out a series of activities in alignment with the IUPAC capacity-building initiative for teachers on hands-on small-scale chemistry experiments:
The first activity: Conducting a workshop of small-scale chemistry experiments in Sinhala and Tamil. In-service advisors and master teachers of 395 people across all nine provinces of the country received small-scale lab kits and handouts to gain knowledge and acquire good attitudes toward science studies through practical, hands-on experience on small-scale chemistry experiments. (October–November 2023).
The second activity: Providing academic support in organizing workshop training programs on small-scale chemistry, organized by the Provincial Departments of Education in the Northern, Eastern, and North-Central Provinces. The third activity: Conducting a workshop of small-scale chemistry experiments for 26 lecturers from the National Colleges of Education (NCoEs) in June 2024.
